An MP supported the decision of the Supreme Court of Ukraine to recognize a same-sex couple as a "family"

An MP of the Golos party, Inna Sovsun, welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court of Ukraine to recognize a same-sex couple as a «family». Sovsun, as one of the co-authors of the bill on registered partnerships, explained that Ukrainian law distinguishes between the concepts of «family» and «spouses.» «Family» is a broader concept that includes, for example, a mom with a child or a grandmother with grandchildren, while «spouses» are people who have formalized their relationship. Gay couple Zoryan and Timur, whose case was considered by the court, sought recognition as a family, realizing that the status of spouses within the current legislation is not available. This is reported by UNIAN.

Sovsun noted that there is already at least one couple who filed a similar lawsuit. One of the partners is a serviceman, and his lover does not have the same rights as military wives. The deputy emphasized that the logical solution would be a legislative settlement of this issue to avoid heavy court procedures. However, according to her, there is no political will for this yet, despite the fact that the requirement to establish a mechanism for same-sex couples is part of the European integration commitments.

The court decision, according to Sovsun, will not directly affect the legislative process, but demonstrates that the existing legal framework theoretically allows recognizing such relationships. It is important to show real cases and stop discrimination against same-sex couples, emphasized the MP.
