The Synod of the Church of Cyprus commented on the "incidents" with former Metropolitan Tihikos of Paphos

The Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus has issued an official statement aimed at restoring the truth in relation to recent incidents and publications concerning the banned former Metropolitan Tihikos of Paphos. The document emphasizes that clerics under suspension are not allowed to wear the vestments of their ministry or take part in liturgical actions such as the proskomidia.
According to the Orthodoxia news agency, last Sunday former Metropolitan Tihikos appeared at the Church of the Holy Apostles Paul and Barnabas, where he performed actions not in keeping with his current status. According to the Archdiocese, after a remark by the rector of the church about the «non-canonical nature of his behavior,» the former hierarch reacted aggressively, using physical force against the clergyman. This fact is confirmed by the testimony of a second priest who was present at the incident.
The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus clarifies that Tychicus is not prohibited from praying or singing on the choir, especially since he has the relevant skills. However, he is not authorized to perform liturgical acts characteristic of a serving bishop. The statement also refutes rumors that the Archbishop allegedly encouraged Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos to fabricate charges against the former Metropolitan. The allegations have been called «false and baseless» and instructions have already been given to the Archdiocese’s legal department to take appropriate legal action.
The Church concluded its official appeal by recalling that the accusations that led to the Metropolitan’s deposition were purely ecclesiological in nature and were supported by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The authorities urged the faithful of Paphos to maintain their trust in the official Church and not to be influenced by «deprived clerics.» Procedures for the election of a new Metropolitan of Paphos are expected to be launched soon.
