Greece is developing a legislative framework to support historic Orthodox Patriarchates

The Greek government has initiated a process to strengthen the administrative and financial stability of the ancient Orthodox Patriarchates through new legislation. This measure is aimed at creating a reliable basis for the functioning of church institutions in the face of modern regional challenges.
According to Orthodoxia.info, the discussion of the planned changes took place in an atmosphere of constructive dialog and full understanding. The parties recognized the need to introduce formal mechanisms for long-term support, which are currently under consideration in Athens. It is expected that the new legal framework will significantly expand the opportunities of the Patriarchates in the implementation of their humanitarian, educational and cultural programs, while ensuring the institutional sustainability of the ancient religious centers.
Recall, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem at its March 12, 2026 meeting focused on praying for peace, protecting Christian communities and discussing the initiative to convene the Pan-Orthodox Council, accompanied by an appeal to world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
