The UOC defended its rights to the Transfiguration Monastery in Knyazhychi in the Court of Appeal

The Northern Economic Court of Appeal in Kyiv confirmed the illegality of the decisions of the Brovary City Council regarding the termination of the community’s right to land and the transfer of the buildings of the Transfiguration Monastery in Knyazhychi for lease to third-party organizations. This court ruling secures the right of ownership and use of the property to the religious organization, despite the attempts of local authorities to change the status of church facilities.
According to the Information and Education Department of the UOC, the court of appeal upheld the decision of the Economic Court of Kyiv region of August 29, 2025. The conflict arose in 2022, when Brovary city Council adopted acts to deprive the community of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky monastery of the Boryspil diocese of the right of permanent use of the land plot.
During the proceedings, the court rejected the city council’s arguments about possible restrictions on the activities of the UOC structures, emphasizing that the monastery community is a separate legal entity and is not subject to the claimed administrative prohibitions. The arbitrators pointed out the need for strict compliance with the procedures established by law when changing the status of church land and real estate. This case is recognized as a key case in a series of property disputes between religious communities and local self-government bodies in Kyiv region.
