Following the fire, the Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is at risk of excessive moisture

Emergency repairs are continuing at the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to address the damage caused by the enemy attack that took place on June 15. According to life.kyiv.ua, the main threat to the architectural monument at this time is excess moisture that seeped into the walls, the iconostasis, and elements of the wall paintings during firefighting efforts.

Heat guns, dehumidifiers, and ventilation systems are operating around the clock to stabilize the microclimate inside the church. DTEK organized emergency power supply, and the necessary equipment was provided by the State Emergency Service, the public organization “Center for Assistance to the Arts of Ukraine – Kyiv,” and the international partner Ukraine Art Aid Center.

As a reminder, on the night of June 15, as a result of Russian forces shelling Kyiv, a fire broke out on the roof of the Assumption Cathedral, covering an area of approximately 800 square meters. Immediately after the incident, valuable icons and liturgical relics were evacuated from the cathedral. Rescue workers dismantled the damaged roof sections to prevent further structural damage.

The Assumption Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has now suffered large-scale damage for the third time in its history. Experts are continuing to assess the damage to this unique 11th-century monument, which is of immense significance to Ukraine’s cultural heritage.
