The Svyatogorsk Lavra has appealed for help in rehabilitating the monks who were injured in the attack

The Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra issued an official appeal to the public, calling for assistance in the treatment and recovery of the monastery’s monks, who were seriously injured during an armed attack that took place on August 23, 2026. According to , the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the tragic incident resulted in the death of one monk and severe injuries to two other members of the monastic community.

Monk Varsonofy died as a result of the attack. Monk Gregory and monastery worker Andrei Kirienko sustained multiple penetrating stab wounds and injuries, after which the attackers threw them down a steep slope. The victims received emergency medical care in Slavyansk and were subsequently transferred to hospitals in Kharkiv. At this time, both patients have undergone surgery, but they face a long rehabilitation process.
