Scandal at a Swedish School: Elementary School Students Were Forced to Recite an Islamic Prayer

A public outcry has erupted in Sweden following an incident at an elementary school where third-grade students were forced to perform an Islamic religious ritual during a social studies class. The students were forced to kneel and recite passages from the Quran in Arabic.
The incident raised serious concerns among parents, one of whom filed an official complaint. According to the child, the teachers’ actions were not voluntary, and the prayers themselves included phrases glorifying Allah. The school’s principal, Teresa Algren, attempted to justify the incident on educational grounds, stating that the teachers were merely seeking to demonstrate the practical aspects of Islam. Nevertheless, she acknowledged that the instructions given to the children had not been properly formulated.
In the wake of the scandal, the school administration was forced to revise the curriculum and impose a complete ban on any form of prayer during class. Notably, after reviewing a parent’s complaint, the Swedish School Inspectorate found no violations of the Education Act and closed the case. This decision sparked a wave of criticism from experts. In particular, Victoria Enquist, an associate professor of law at Uppsala University, expressed bewilderment at the organization of a religious ceremony within the walls of a public secular school, where such activities should be prohibited.
