In Egypt, a former Muslim faces life in prison for changing his religion

Egyptian authorities have charged 30-year-old Said Abdelrazek, who could face life imprisonment for his decision to convert to Christianity and his attempt to have his new religious status officially recognized. The trial in this case began back in April 2026.

According to the case file, the man is accused of “spreading ideas that undermine national unity,” as well as disrespecting Islam and challenging its fundamental tenets. Said’s story began in 2016, after which he was repeatedly subjected to persecution by the security services. In 2018, he was forced to leave the country; however, after being deported in 2024, he faced brutal treatment, torture, and pressure from security forces attempting to force him to renounce his faith.

In July 2025, after attempting to obtain official recognition of his change of religion, Abdelrazek was arrested again. He is currently being held in prison under extremely harsh conditions. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Coptic Solidarity, view this case as direct persecution for exercising the right to freedom of conscience, which criminalizes an individual’s religious choice.
