In the Poltava region, the prosecutor's office has initiated proceedings to seize the Church of the Dormition from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church community

The Lubny District Prosecutor’s Office has demanded that the Church of the Dormition, located in the village of Peski in the Poltava region, be transferred to state ownership. Currently, this religious building is used by a religious community of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The legal proceedings are taking place in the Economic Court of Poltava Oblast, where the lawsuit was filed in early 2026. The prosecutor’s office is seeking to have the property transferred to the Poltava Oblast Military Administration. The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine has also been drawn into the proceedings and is acting on the plaintiff’s side.
The Church of the Dormition, built in 1914, is an architectural monument of national significance. During the Soviet period, the building was used for economic purposes, specifically as a grain storage facility. It was not until 1992 that the historic site was transferred to the religious community, which has been holding regular services there ever since.
As a reminder, we previously reported that government authorities continue to expropriate churches belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This time, the expropriation affected the St. Peter and Paul Church, an architectural monument of national significance located in the village of Moysovka in the Cherkasy region.
