Patriarch Bartholomew proposed that the Bulgarian Church serve as a mediator in the dialogue with the Russian Orthodox Church

Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople expressed the view that the Bulgarian Orthodox Church is capable of playing a key role in overcoming the existing differences between the Phanar and the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). The head of the Patriarchate of Constantinople emphasized that by maintaining good relations with both Moscow and Constantinople, the Bulgarian Church can contribute to the restoration of unity within global Orthodoxy. He made this statement during a broadcast on “BNR.”
In his statement, Patriarch Bartholomew emphasized that the current ecclesiastical crisis requires “repentance, sincerity, and prayer.” At the same time, he placed the primary responsibility for the current situation on the Russian side, noting the need to recognize a shared responsibility for the future of the Orthodox world.
Commenting on his personal relationship with the newly elected Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel, Bartholomew acknowledged the existence of past disagreements but emphasized that, following their personal meeting in Thessaloniki, the two sides had reached a mutual understanding.
It is worth noting that Patriarch Daniel, who officially took office in 2024, is known for his consistent stance on a number of canonical issues, including his non-recognition of the OCU. Nevertheless, the Bulgarian Primate’s recent visit to the Phanar in December 2025 indicates a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue, something Patriarch Daniel himself had previously called for.
