The Vatican calls for immediate nuclear disarmament to ensure global security

Archbishop Christophe El-Kassis, the Vatican’s permanent observer to the United Nations, delivered an important statement during a thematic debate on nuclear weapons at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. According to Vatican News, the Vatican insists that the complete elimination of nuclear arsenals is the only reliable way to strengthen international peace and protect humanity from existential threats.

In his remarks, the archbishop emphasized that the current doctrine of nuclear deterrence is a “profound contradiction,” as it makes global security dependent on the threat of catastrophic destruction. Rather than bringing stability, the current modernization of nuclear arsenals and rising global tensions only increase the risks to the planet.

The Catholic Church is particularly concerned about the integration of artificial intelligence into nuclear systems, which requires strict human oversight. The Vatican calls on nuclear powers to strictly adhere to their obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and also supports initiatives to ban nuclear weapons and insists on the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
