The U.S. Congress drew attention to the persecution of the UOC

On June 4, 2024, US Assistant Secretary of State for 2017-2021 Robert Destro, who is a key member of the team of United States presidential candidate Donald Trump, took part in a US Congressional hearing. The politician drew attention to the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, calling “abomination” tolerance and silence of these facts in Washington. This was reported by the international lawyer of the UOC Robert Amsterdam in his account in X.

“We say that we are for religious freedom, but we are for the deconstruction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. We, you, know that the Ukrainian authorities are arresting priests and nuns. You know how it looks like – they fund Greek Orthodox newspapers, but they keep silent about Ukrainian ones. The organization of Ukrainian journalists, Orthodox journalists, they say nothing about them,” – said Destro.

We will remind, earlier Robert Destro, who is one of the key members of the team of the candidate for President of the United States Donald Trump, criticized the attempts of the Ukrainian authorities to ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Destro called such actions of the authorities “a travesty of democracy” and added that the adoption of the bill No. 8371 would be a direct violation of the rights of believers.
