The Ukrainian Orthodox Church commented on the results of the vote “for the ban of the UOC” in the Verkhovna Rada

The head of the Synodal Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Kliment (Vecherya), has commented on the adoption in the Verkhovna Rada of Law No. 8371 aimed at banning the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The hierarch said that the Rada passed this law despite the fact that the legal department of the parliament pointed out serious inconsistencies with the Constitution of Ukraine. The words of Metropolitan Kliment are reported by the publication “Strana.ua”.
“The best comment on this creation of the Verkhovna Rada was provided by the legal department of the Parliament, which develops a detailed analysis of all bills. So the lawyers of the Verkhovna Rada itself argue that the text of the just adopted law does not comply with several fundamental articles of the Ukrainian Constitution and a number of principles that Ukraine has ratified in international treaties as a democratic state. This concerns the legal side of the law. But there is also a moral one. If millions of believing Ukrainian citizens knew that the current parliament would ban churches, then obviously at the elections they would have formed a completely different composition of the parliament,” the Metropolitan said.
We will remind, earlier Metropolitan Kliment (Vecherya) commented on the legislative ban of the UOC. The bishop explained that it is impossible to ban the Church as any other legal organization, and such a decision of the Parliament will create more problems for the government, then for the UOC.
