On September 11, 2024, during a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, the hierarchs of the BOC decided to award the Order of St. John of Ryla, First Class, to Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. The decision on the award was made in connection with the corresponding proposal of Metropolitan Nikolai of Plovdiv, known for his sympathy for the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
