The Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church dismissed Metropolitan Hilarion from the post of administrator of the Donetsk diocese

On October 24, 2024, a regular meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church was held in Moscow. The meeting was chaired by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. One of the decisions made at the meeting of the Synod was the release of Metropolitan Hilarion (Shukalo) of Donetsk and Mariupol from the post of administrator of the Donetsk diocese. “Considering the state of health of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Donetsk and Mariupol, which significantly hinders his unimpeded management of the diocese, especially in the conditions of the region where there are hostilities, to retire His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion with an expression of gratitude to him for his many years of labor to build up the diocesan life, the construction of numerous churches, the ordination of many clergymen. The place of retired stay of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion was determined to be the Simferopol diocese with the receipt of maintenance from the Donetsk diocesan administration. His Eminence Donetsk and Mariupol to be Metropolitan of Vladivostok and Primorsky Vladimir with his release from the management of the Vladivostok diocese and the expression of gratitude for his labors”, – stated in the journal № 107 of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Recall, on October 11, 2023, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church decided to change the manager of the Crimean Metropolis. Instead of Metropolitan Lazar (Shvets) of Simferopol and Crimea, Metropolitan Tikhon (Shevkunov) was appointed to govern the Crimean Metropolis.
