It makes no sense to prolong this war, - Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine

The Roman Catholic Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas, gave an interview to the Vatican media in which he spoke about his attitude to the continuation of the war in Ukraine. Kulbokas believes that the parties to the conflict need to sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible, as this conflict is pointless. The words of the Nuncio are reported by Vatican News.

«Unfortunately, the war is not becoming less intense: the death toll is increasing with every year of war. That is why, in the face of uncertainty and fear, it is very important to give what is happening a Christian meaning. I would not say that the Church has succeeded, but every pastor, every believer is trying to do what he can,» said the nuncio.

The Vatican representative added that among Ukrainians there is growing frustration with what is happening and distrust of international institutions, whose actions are extremely ineffective. Kulbokas added that the prolongation of the conflict makes people disappointed in their previous illusions, and the war itself has ceased to make any sense.

«There is a growing distrust among Ukrainians of international organizations that are unable to do anything. For example, in practice, the Geneva agreements proved to be ineffective, as visits to Ukrainian prisoners are impossible. Thus, frustration is growing, and it is very difficult to answer the question of the meaning of prolonging the war, and I am asking myself this question. For me personally, the prolongation of the war allows me to better understand the illusions that we often trust, namely the perishability of these illusions. However, humanly speaking, the war makes no sense,» Kulbokas added.

As reported, on August 25, 2024 , Pope Francis made an address in which he mentioned Law No. 8371, adopted in the Ukrainian Parliament, aimed at banning the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The pontiff emphasized that no church in the world should be banned because it offers prayer against evil and unrighteousness.
