As reported, after an unsuccessful nighttime attempt to seize the cathedral on October 17, the OCU raiders, having increased their number, finally took possession of the Archangel Michael Cathedral of the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. During the next clash, the clergy and parishioners of the church were expelled from the premises. Many clergymen and believers of the UOC suffered injuries of varying severity and chemical burns from the raiders’ use of tear gas.
OCU seizes five UOC tamples in Cherkasy in 2024
The Cherkasy Diocese of the OCU reports that the organization has managed to seize five churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the city of Cherkasy. In addition, there are five more churches of the UOC, which the OCU apparently also intends to appropriate. This is reported by Suspilne.Cherkasy.
It is reported that the OCU managed to seize the following UOC communities in Cherkasy:
- St. Michael’s Garrison Parish (212 Nadpilna Street);
- Holy Presentation parish (168/1 V. Chornovola St.);
- The parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (374 Blahovisna St.);
- St. Sophronius Parish (18 Vikenty Khvoyky Street);
- Holy Dormition Parish (Geronimivka).
At the same time, there are communities in the city that remain under the control of the UOC:
- St. Andrew the First-Called Parish (30 Heroiv Dnipra Street);
- the parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord (153, Second Ukrainian Front Street);
- the parish of the Icon of the Mother of God “Unburnt Bush” (8 Onoprienko St.);
- Parish of the Nativity of Christ (39/1 Sumhaitska Street);
- the parish of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy and Consolation” (15/1 Olena Teliha Street).
