As reported, on March 3, 2025, the Dnipro Court of Appeal completed consideration of the appeals of the lawyers of the hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Arseny of Sviatohirsk. The new court ruling extended the bishop’s detention in the Dnipro pre-trial detention center for another 2 months.
Court gives explanation for lifting of preventive measure against Metropolitan Theodosius
On March 18, 2025, the Sosnovsky District Court of Cherkasy released the hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Theodosius of Cherkasy and Kaniv, from serving night house arrest on his own recognizance. The court gave an additional explanation of this decision, arguing that there are no longer any reasons for keeping the hierarch under night house arrest. The judge’s comment was reported by Suspilne.Cherkasy.
“The court’s decision is motivated by the fact that over time, the risks that were the basis for the election/extension of the preventive measure have decreased. It is taken into account that the accused was under round-the-clock house arrest from April 12 to December 20, and from December 21, 2023 to March 18, 2025 — under night house arrest. During the period of his house arrest, he did not violate his obligations, did not evade or hide from the court. In addition, victims and witnesses have been questioned in the criminal proceedings, and written evidence is being examined,” — the court’s press service said.
