In particular, according to the Geodynamic Institute, the shock occurred 30 km southeast of Karea (the capital of the “monastic republic” — ed.) on Mount Athos and at a depth of 16.9 km,” — the report says.

Earlier we reported that a series of earthquakes that occurred in the first half of June 2025 in northern Greece damaged monasteries on Mount Athos. The aftershocks damaged architectural structures and church paintings in a number of ancient monasteries, including Xenophontos.
