Mel Gibson begins filming “Resurrection”

Mel Gibson, the author of the well-known Christian film The Passion of the Christ, announced that he has begun work on the film Resurrection, which will be a continuation of the artistic embodiment of the Gospel story. The main shooting of the film will take place at Cinecittà, a studio that has a glorious history of creating biblical and historical films. Additional scenes will be filmed in southern Italy – Matera, Ginoza, Gravina Laterza and Altamura. This is a hint of the places used in the 2004 film The Passion of the Christ. It is reported that the project involves actors who are well known to viewers for The Passion of the Christ. Jim Caviezel will once again play Jesus Christ, Maya Morgenstern will play the Virgin Mary, and Francesco De Vito will play the Apostle Peter. Given that more than 20 years have passed since the premiere of the first film, the creators plan to use computer graphics technology to rejuvenate the actors.

The film’s script was developed over seven years in collaboration with Randall Wallace, the screenwriter of Braveheart, and the director’s brother, Chris Gibson. The project itself is being created in collaboration with Icon Productions and Lionsgate, which will also handle its international distribution.

According to Gibson, Resurrection will not be just a sequel to The Passion of the Christ. The project will explore the deep spiritual and metaphysical dimensions of the Easter events, including Christ’s descent into hell, the battle with the forces of darkness, the fall of angels and other elements that go beyond the literal message of the Gospel.
