Several earthquakes struck Mount Athos again

On Monday, August 4, 2025, Mount Athos was again shaken by underground tremors caused by several earthquakes that occurred in the vicinity of the capital of the monastic republic. Experts from the Greek Institute of Seismic Research called them insignificant, as the underground tremors measured no more than 4 on the Richter scale. This was reported by Orthodoxia.Info.

«There is nothing special about this, the magnitude is below 4 points in the same area that was disturbed last year, and seismic activity is returning with little force. We should not be concerned about this phenomenon. We are monitoring the development of the phenomenon. There are fluctuations, but this activity is of little strength,» — said the head of the institute, Efthimios Lekkas.

Earlier we reported that a series of earthquakes that occurred in the first half of June 2025 in northern Greece damaged monasteries on Mount Athos. The aftershocks damaged architectural structures and church paintings in a number of ancient monasteries, including Xenophontos.
