Court arrested in absentia protodeacon and ex-NDP MP Vadym Novinsky

The Kiev Pecherskyy district court on September 15, 2025, has chosen a preventive measure in absentia in the form of detention for Protodeacon of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and former MP Vadym Novynskyy. He is suspected of high treason and inciting religious hatred, which may entail extradition and imprisonment for up to 15 years. About it the press service of the SBI.
According to the press service of the State bureau of investigations (SBI), Vadim Novinsky is named “curator of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine”. According to the investigation, he “has been promoting Russian narratives through media interviews, public speeches, as well as in posts on his own website and social media since the very beginning of the Russian Federation’s armed aggression against Ukraine, back in 2014.”
The SBI claims that “the pro-Russian MP followed the instructions of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill (Gundyaev), maintained close communication with him for a long time and was in his hierarchical subordination.” The agency also states that the protodeacon “systematically made public statements with signs of religious intolerance and hostility”.
The cleric’s guilt, according to the SBI, was proven on the basis of “complex forensic psychological and linguistic examinations”. The maximum penalty on the charges is up to fifteen years in prison with or without confiscation of property. Currently, Vadim Novinsky is outside Ukraine.
