Poll: Nearly half of Americans think the Bible is a collection of myths

A new sociological study in the United States has revealed growing contradictions in Americans’ views of the Bible and the foundations of the Christian faith. According to the results, almost half of the respondents consider the Holy Scriptures to be a collection of myths rather than the Word of God. At the same time, a significant portion of respondents also doubt the divinity of Jesus Christ, although they recognize the Bible as an authoritative guide for life.

According to the Word about Word website, citing The Ligonier State of Theology 2025 report conducted by Lifeway Research, 48% of American adults agree with the statement that the Bible is «a collection of useful but ancient myths» rather than literal truth. Only 44% of those surveyed believe the Bible’s teachings are 100% accurate. At the same time, exactly half of respondents(50%) believe that Scripture can serve as an authoritative «guide for life.» A total of 3,001 U.S. adults participated in the survey.

The survey also looked at key doctrines of Christianity. It found that 48% of Americans believe Jesus is «a great teacher but not God.» This view contradicts the traditional Christian doctrine of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit), which 55% of survey participants nevertheless recognize. In addition, only 53% of respondents unequivocally agree that God is perfect and cannot make mistakes.

Finally, the report showed changes in religious practices. Most Americans expressed the belief that worshiping God at home can completely replace attending church services, which indicates a trend towards individualization of faith.

We shall remind you that the Ukrainian Institute of Sociological Research «Razumkov Center» has conducted another opinion poll on the trust of Ukrainians in public institutions operating in the country. According to the published data, the Church, as a set of religious organizations, is trusted less than the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteer organizations.
