The former mayor of Irpen, known for his fight with the UOC, was granted a preventive measure in a corruption case

The Svyatoshynskyy district court of Kiev has elected a preventive measure for the former mayor of Irpen, Oleksandr Markushyn, who was previously involved in the seizure of Ukrainian Orthodox Church churches. The measure of restraint in the form of bail was appointed in the framework of criminal proceedings on illegal seizure of communal property.
As reported by the Information and educational Department of the UOC, the case concerns the write-off of real estate in favor of the assistant of the official. According to the investigation, in 2019 Alexander Markushin, being the Deputy mayor of Irpen, organized the illegal possession of the communal land plot and the building of the boiler room, located in the central part of the city.
In the framework of this criminal proceeding the court decided to appoint a bail in the amount of 300 thousand hryvnia. The report also notes that the former mayor actively fought against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and was involved in a number of seizures of churches in Kyiv region.
On October 25, 2023, in the city of Irpin, Kyiv region, at the initiative of the local city council, the Holy Trinity Church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was «transferred» to the OCU.
