Synod of the Archdiocese of Australia condemned "Russian attacks" on the Patriarch of Constantinople

The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Archdiocese of Australia (Patriarchate of Constantinople), presided over by Archbishop Makary, has strongly condemned the criticism of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) against Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. The Synod meeting, held in Sydney on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, regarded the moves as «impious, obscene and false» attempts to undermine the authority of the «Primate of Orthodoxy.»

According to Orthodoxia.info, the emergency meeting of the hierarchs of the «fifth continent» was called to discuss recent statements by the Russian SVR to Patriarch Bartholomew. Synod members unequivocally condemned these actions, calling them «an attempt to morally humiliate His Holiness Bartholomew.»

The Synod statement emphasized the spread of «impious, obscene and false» elements aimed at «damaging the prestige of the Head of Orthodoxy.» According to the communiqué, these attacks are aimed at legitimizing in the public consciousness treacherous practices against the Patriarchate of Constantinople that undermine the unity of the Church.

Archbishop Macarius and members of the Synod expressed their full and unwavering support for His Holiness Bartholomew, wishing him the continuation of his many years of service for the good of Orthodoxy.

In conclusion, the hierarchs recalled the historical reality, emphasizing that «the Mother Church of Constantinople throughout history has benefited the local Churches, including the Russian Church, receiving, unfortunately, in return only ingratitude».

Recall, earlier we reported that the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation (SVR) warned about the plans of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople to grant autocephaly to the unrecognized «Montenegrin Orthodox Church». It is reported that these actions are seen as a blow to the Serbian Orthodox Church.
