A man in Lvivshchyna received 3 years in prison for evading mobilization due to religious beliefs

In Lviv region, a 42-year-old local resident was sentenced to three years in prison for evading military service during mobilization. The man explained his non-appearance on summons by his religious beliefs, but the court did not accept these arguments because it was not about fixed-term service, which can be replaced by alternative service, but about mobilization conscription.

According to Sud.ua, a resident of the region, who evaded his duties as a person liable for military service, was brought to court. According to the Lviv regional Prosecutor’s office, in 2024 the man passed a military medical commission and was recognized fit for military service for health reasons, which is confirmed by the relevant medical report.

After that, he was given a summons to arrive on a certain date to be sent to a military unit. However, the person liable for military service did not appear at the territorial center of manning and social support for service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“His non-appearance he explained by religious beliefs. However, the summons was not for fixed-term military service, which can be replaced by alternative service, but for military service during mobilization. Consequently, the person liable for military service violated the requirements of the current legislation and evaded the military draft,” the prosecutor’s office said, emphasizing the difference between the two types of service.

As a result, the court, having considered all the circumstances of the case, sentenced the man to three years of imprisonment.

We will remind, on February 3, 2026, the employees of the TCC was kidnapped a clergyman of the Vladimir-Volynsk diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. We are talking about the rector of the church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring” in the village of Horodilets in Kovel district of Volyn region, Archpriest John Chirik.
