Orthodox bishops in the UK have spoken out against the expansion of abortion practices

Orthodox hierarchs serving in the United Kingdom have sent a formal petition to the House of Lords expressing strong opposition to an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill that could legalize abortion up to the moment of birth. According to Orthodox Times, the religious leaders are urging lawmakers to recognize the sacred value of human life and protect unborn children.
The joint letter, signed by dozens of Orthodox bishops from across the country, emphasizes that a child in the womb is a human life, subject to unconditional protection from the moment of conception. The authors of the appeal insist that members of the House of Lords have a duty to consider the rights and dignity of the most vulnerable members of society when considering current legislative initiatives.
Beyond the legal aspects, the bishops drew attention to the need for real and meaningful support for pregnant women, especially those in difficult situations. The hierarchs expressed a strong pro-life stance, urging the state not to expand the practice of abortion, but to create conditions for safe motherhood and the protection of human dignity.
It will be recalled that former Conservative MP Miriam Cates expressed serious concerns about Scotland’s move towards «abortion extremism». Her warning followed a November report by the Scottish Government’s Abortion Law Reform Expert Group, which is said to contain recommendations that would potentially allow abortion up to the moment of birth and weaken existing regulatory requirements.
