Christian community in the West Bank claims critical threat to existence

The rector of the only fully Christian village in the West Bank, Father Bashar Fawadleh, has issued an official statement about the unprecedented pressure on local residents. According to Christian Today, the village of Taybeh, which is home to about 1,400 people, is facing tightening measures by the Israeli government and increasing acts of aggression by settlers, jeopardizing the future of the Christian presence in the region.

According to the source, the situation has escalated since February 6, when the Israeli authorities tightened control over the management of certain religious sites and increased the number of military checkpoints in the West Bank. Father Fawadleh described the current actions as “the most dangerous since 1967”, emphasizing that many locals see it as preparations for the full annexation of the territories. As a result of the growing instability and fear of the future, 16 families have already been forced to emigrate from the village.

Of particular concern are the systematic attacks by Israeli settlers against civilians and their property. Attempts to set fire to the church, vandalism, destruction of cars and olive groves, which are the main source of income for the people of Taybeh, have been reported. Despite the regularity of such incidents, Israeli law enforcement authorities have not made a single arrest, which, according to the priest, only encourages further violence and the expansion of settlements on Palestinian lands.

In his address to the international community, Father Bashar Fawadleh called for global solidarity and defense of the rights of the faithful in the Holy Land. “Taybeh is not just a village; it is a living testimony of the Christian presence where Christianity originated,” he said. The priest emphasized that while the departure may seem forced, the decision to remain in their native land is an act of faith and hope to achieve human dignity, justice and peace.

Recall that renowned American journalist Tucker Carlson, in his new report, drew attention to the difficult situation of Christians in the Holy Land, arguing that their persecution is increasing in US-funded Israel, while in neighboring Muslim Jordan, Christians are thriving and feel safer.
