The Archbishop of Cyprus has called for the status of the Cyprus question to be reconsidered as a problem of Turkish occupation

Archbishop George of Cyprus, during solemn events in Nicosia, made a statement on the need to officially recognize the current situation on the island as a result of the Turkish invasion and occupation. The Primate called on the Cypriot and Greek authorities to actively fight for the full liberation of the territories, emphasizing the priority of national dignity over compromise solutions.

According to Orthodoxia News Agency, the statement was made on April 1, 2026, at an event marking the anniversaries of the national liberation struggle. Archbishop George emphasized that the Cyprus problem must be redefined precisely as a problem of “invasion and occupation,” adding, “We must fight for liberation, not for a solution that conforms to Turkish standards.” He also cautioned that without the proactive struggle of the people themselves, they should not expect help from outside forces.

Officials also expressed support for the Church’s position. Cypriot Education Minister Athena Michaelidou said that in the context of the ongoing illegal occupation, it is crucial to intensify diplomatic efforts for the triumph of justice and the reunification of the country. For his part, Greek Ambassador Konstantinos Kollias reiterated that the lifting of the occupation is a paramount national goal and assured of the unconditional support of Greece and Hellenism as a whole for Cyprus.
