UK records spike in crime against churches, with 10 offenses a day

Some 3,809 church property crimes were committed across the UK during 2025, an average of 10 offenses per day. According to a report by the Countryside Alliance, cited by Christian Today, religious properties are increasingly becoming easy targets for thieves and vandals, jeopardizing the country’s cultural and social heritage.
Statistics compiled from requests to police departments show 1,619 incidents of theft and break-ins, 1,018 acts of willful damage to property (including vandalism and arson) and 1,000 incidents of violence. The most difficult situation is observed in London, where more than 560 crimes were recorded, as well as in West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. However, experts emphasize that the real scale of the problem could be much higher, as seven major police departments, including Police Scotland, did not provide data for the report.
Countryside Alliance external affairs director Mo Metcalfe-Fisher said churches play a key role in local communities, particularly in rural areas. He also strongly criticized the government’s decision to introduce VAT on repairs to church buildings, which, against a backdrop of inflation and lack of adequate financial support, makes it extremely burdensome to maintain churches. «This must not be allowed to continue. It is vital for the government to increase funding to maintain these public assets,» he said.
Among the most high profile cases, the report cites the theft of £25,000 worth of antique silverware from St Margaret of Antioch church in Hertfordshire, and the deliberate destruction of historic stained glass windows in Nottinghamshire. Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Nolan urged citizens to report any suspicious activity near religious sites, especially those in isolated locations.
Representatives of the National Churches Trust added that new tax policies and rising crime are demoralizing volunteers. According to experts, if state support does not become more accessible, Britain’s historic monuments will be in a critical situation, becoming defenseless in the face of criminal attacks.
