Election of the new Patriarch of Georgia: the Holy Synod will determine the list of candidates on April 28

The Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church has scheduled a meeting for April 28, 2026, during which a list of three candidates for the post of the new Patriarch of Georgia will be formed. This stage is key in the process of preparation for the subsequent election of the Primate of the Church by the Enlarged Synod.

According to Greek Orthodoxia News Agency, the official meeting will begin at 12:00 noon at the Georgian Patriarchate building. According to a statement from the Georgian Patriarchate’s Public Relations Service, the main purpose of the meeting will be to nominate three candidates whose candidacies will be put to a final vote.

«On April 28 this year at 12:00 noon, a meeting of the Holy Synod will be held at the Georgian Patriarchate. Three candidates for Patriarchs will be determined at this meeting, » the official communiqué of the ministry emphasizes. It is expected that after the Synod’s work is completed, the names of the elected hierarchs will be presented to the general public and the church community for the further process of electing the new head of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
