Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri) elected as the new Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia

At the historic Enlarged Council of the Georgian Orthodox Church held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) in Tbilisi, a new Primate was elected. Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri) of Senaki and Chkhorotskuia became the new Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia.

According to Orthodox Times, this decision marks an important milestone in the modern history of Georgian Orthodoxy. The election took place in the solemn atmosphere of the country’s main spiritual center, gathering the highest clergy to vote.

Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri) will now officially head the Georgian Orthodox Church, assuming the duties of spiritual leadership of the flock. The Council at which this decision was taken emphasizes the continuity of traditions and the unity of the Church in Tbilisi.
