Ukrainian citizen detained in Poland for attacking a Catholic nun

In the Polish town of Bielsko-Biała, law enforcement agencies have detained a 26-year-old Ukrainian citizen who aggressively attacked a 71-year-old Catholic nun. The incident, qualified by the investigation as an act of «religious hooliganism», may result in the detainee being imprisoned for up to six years.

According to the publication In Poland, the attack took place on May 11, 2026 at a public transport stop. The attacker ran up to an elderly woman and began shouting insults related to her religion. In the course of the attack, the man ripped the nun’s cross from her neck and threw it onto the roadway. It is noteworthy that the victim herself prevented the attacker from getting on the bus, as a result of which he was forced to flee.

Police officers located the suspect in a neighboring area of the city, relying on accurate eyewitness descriptions. At this time, the man has been formally charged with religious insult and assault and battery. Although the basic punishment under these articles is up to three years in prison, the qualification of the actions as hooliganism allows the court to double this term.
