Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) appointed to serve in Brazil

By decree of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia dated June 3, 2026, Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev), who had previously been in retirement, was sent to serve in the Diocese of Argentina and South America. The transfer is due to the impossibility of performing the duties of his previous assignment in Europe.

According to the press service of the Russian Orthodox Church, this decision was made due to objective circumstances that make it impossible to further implement the decision of the Holy Synod of December 27, 2024. Earlier, Metropolitan Hilarion was assigned the place of service of the Church of the First-Faithful Apostles Peter and Paul in Karlovy Vary.

According to the text of the patriarchal decree, the new place of residence and ministry of the bishop will be the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in the city of Santa Rosa, as well as the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian in the city of Campina das Misoins, located in Brazil.
