The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament stated that the EU’s attacks on the Georgian Orthodox Church are unacceptable

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili issued a strong statement directed at European Union representatives, calling their attempts to discredit the Georgian Orthodox Church a “red line” that the country’s authorities will not allow to be crossed. According to “Sputnik Georgia, ” the politician called for an immediate and stern response to such actions by Western institutions.
During a conversation with journalists, Papuashvili expressed particular dissatisfaction with the statements made by Lithuanian MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, accusing her of creating conditions for the systematic persecution of religious organizations in Georgia. The speaker emphasized that the government does not intend to allow EU representatives to turn criticism of or pressure on the Church into a social norm, insisting on the need to draw a clear line in relations with European institutions.
For their part, representatives of the Georgian Patriarchate confirmed the existence of systematic external pressure. The head of public relations, Archpriest Andria Dzhamaidze, revealed that European officials have for many years been trying to persuade the clergy to support and promote LGBT initiatives, including the idea of “same-sex marriage.” According to the clergyman, such demands are met with fundamental opposition in Georgian society and are viewed by the Church as a direct threat to traditional values.
