Metropolitan Luke (Kovalenko): The Unity of the Church as a Spiritual Shield Against the Dictatorship of the Majority

Metropolitan Luke (Kovalenko) of Zaporizhzhia and Melitopol delivered an important message on the nature of church unity and the danger of divisions in the modern world. Drawing on the apostolic call to vigilance, His Eminence emphasizes that true unity among the faithful is not the product of sociological consensus or political solidarity, but rather a sacred bond rooted in love and fidelity to Divine Tradition.
According to the Život Crkve website, Metropolitan Luka warns against the so-called “dictatorship of the majority,” explaining that truth is not determined by the number of votes or the fleeting popularity of ideas. According to the hierarch, those who sow discord within the Church often hide behind good intentions and the “modernization” of the faith, while pursuing exclusively their own selfish interests.
In his article, His Eminence notes that spiritual vigilance is the primary defense against such manipulations. When confronted with the deliberate sowing of enmity, the metropolitan advises against engaging in aggressive disputes and instead recommends practicing “holy hygiene of the soul”—distancing oneself from those who seek to sow discord. “The Lord does not overcome darkness through our aggression, but through our quiet and unwavering standing in the Truth,” the bishop concludes , calling on the faithful to preserve peace in their hearts and remain faithful to the canonical order of the Church.
