A 3.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded on Mount Athos

On the morning of Tuesday, July 28, 2026, an earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck the Holy Mountain of Athos. According to Vima Orthodoxias, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 11 kilometers southeast of Uranopolis at a depth of approximately 14.4 kilometers.

The tremors were clearly felt in the administrative center of Karyes, as well as in many monasteries, sketes, and hermitages located in the area. According to initial reports, there have been no reports of casualties or serious damage to monastic buildings and churches of significant historical and architectural value.

Experts continue to monitor seismic activity in the region. Despite the absence of damage, the monks remain on high alert, conducting inspections of the buildings. Experts note that, although this area periodically experiences seismic activity, the increased frequency of earthquakes over the past two years has caused concern among local residents.
