The Supreme Court of Egypt has postponed the hearing of the case involving St. Catherine's Monastery

The Supreme Court of Egypt has decided to postpone, once again, the hearing on the appeal filed by the Brotherhood of St. Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai against the verdict of the Ismailia court. According to the Orthodoxia News Agency ( ), this is already the third postponement, which prolongs the uncertainty regarding the monastery’s legal status.

According to the publication “Ta Nea,” experts view this pause in the legal proceedings as an opportunity to continue behind-the-scenes negotiations between Archbishop Damian of Sinai and representatives of Egyptian government agencies. It is expected that this latest postponement will be the last, and a final decision on the case may be reached within the next month.

The final agreement is expected to grant the state ownership of the monastery’s lands as archaeological heritage sites. At the same time, according to available information, the monastery’s brotherhood will retain the right to indefinite possession and use of the territory without any financial obligations.
