Tragedy in Haiti: An Armed Gang Attacked a Church Housing Refugees

Dozens of civilians were killed in a brutal attack by an armed gang on a Protestant church in Haiti. The incident occurred at a shelter where families had taken refuge after being forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing surge in crime in the country.

According to Le Monde, the tragedy unfolded not far from Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. On August 24, 2026, armed criminals stormed the church building, which was serving as a shelter for displaced people. During the attack, the assailants opened fire, killing about 40 people on the spot, while dozens of others were injured. There are also reports of people who have been kidnapped or are missing.

According to updated figures from UN representatives, the death toll from the “night of terror” may reach 47. Concurrently with the attack on the church, the gang members attacked neighboring residential areas, setting fire to the homes of civilians. According to preliminary reports, one of the largest coalitions of Haitian gangs, seeking to expand its influence, is behind this crime. The country’s authorities have already deployed additional security forces to the affected area to stabilize the situation.
