Metropolitan Anthony called for an objective investigation into the murder of a monk at the Svyatogorsk Lavra

Metropolitan Anthony (Pakanich), Administrator of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, issued an official statement calling on the public and law enforcement agencies not to ignore the tragic murder of a monk at the Svyatogorsk Lavra, Monk Varsonofius (Turyansky). The hierarch emphasized the urgent need for a transparent and objective investigation into the crime.

In his address at , Metropolitan Anthony called the attack on clergy a serious challenge to religious freedom. According to His Eminence, the monks were subjected to brutal violence because of their loyalty to the canonical Church. The hierarch linked the incident to the long-standing atmosphere of pressure directed against the UOC, noting that the actions of certain media outlets, politicians, and those behind the seizures of churches have led to discrimination against believers in society.

“Do not let this death be lost in cold public indifference, the metropolitan emphasized, calling on the authorities to pay special attention to the case in the name of honoring the memory of the deceased monk and ensuring justice. He also expressed words of support for the monastery’s abbot, Metropolitan Arsenius, and the monastic community of the Lavra.

As a reminder, the attack took place on August 23, resulting in the death of Monk Varsonofy and serious injuries to two other people. At this time, law enforcement agencies have opened a criminal investigation into the intentional homicide, and the investigation is being overseen by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense Affairs in the Eastern Region.
