The murder of a monk at the Svyatogorsk Lavra drew the international community’s attention to the situation involving the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

International attorney Robert Amsterdam, who represents the interests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), issued a strong condemnation of the murder of Monk Varsonofy (Turyansky) on the grounds of the Svyatogorsk Dormition Lavra. The incident occurred on August 23, when unknown individuals broke into the monastery, resulting in the death of the victim and injuries to Monk Gregory and Andrei Kirienko, a refugee who was staying at the monastery. This was reported by Helleniscope.
Robert Amsterdam emphasized that this crime is taking place against the backdrop of systematic pressure on the canonical Church in Ukraine. The attorney drew attention to a symbolic coincidence: on the day of the attack, a National Prayer Breakfast was taking place in Kyiv, to which representatives of the UOC were not invited—a fact that, in his view, attests to an atmosphere of marginalization of believers, despite official statements by the authorities regarding the protection of religious freedoms.
The situation surrounding the church issue has moved to the level of high diplomacy. On August 25 in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov presented Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States, with a special report from the Russian Foreign Ministry, dedicated to the actions of the Kyiv authorities regarding the UOC. The document, covering events up to June 2026, lists cases of discrimination, coercive pressure, and the seizure of churches.
According to experts, the issue of persecution of believers is becoming an increasingly significant factor on the international agenda. Amid the uncertainty of the military conflict and growing attention from the Vatican, the situation of the canonical Church in Ukraine is evolving from an internal dispute into a serious international issue that the global Christian community is finding increasingly difficult to ignore.
