The Vatican Secretary for Relations with States reaffirmed the Holy See's commitment to the diplomatic path toward peace with Russia

Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, head of the Vatican’s diplomatic service, concluded a visit to Moscow aimed at promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to Vatican News, this visit—which required a long flight due to logistical constraints—symbolized the Holy See’s unwavering commitment to maintaining dialogue even under the most challenging geopolitical conditions.

During official meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Presidential Advisor Yuri Ushakov, Archbishop Gallagher emphasized that “all wars end with negotiations.” The Vatican does not propose specific technical solutions, leaving that responsibility to the parties to the conflict, but it consistently calls for political will and the search for paths to reconciliation. Particular attention was paid during the talks to the humanitarian aspect, which remains a priority for Pope Francis.

The Holy See’s diplomatic efforts are aimed at maintaining open channels of communication with both Moscow and Kyiv. According to Gallagher, the Vatican is ready to offer its “good offices” to facilitate the negotiation process, should the parties express a willingness to do so. In addition, during his trip, the archbishop met with Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk to discuss issues of inter-Christian cooperation and the protection of the faithful in the face of global challenges.

Concluding his visit, Archbishop Gallagher met with the Catholic community in Moscow, celebrating a solemn Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He expressed his support for local believers and emphasized that the Catholic Church in Russia continues its important charitable and peacemaking work, remaining a vital link in strengthening humanitarian ties.
