Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria received a delegation from the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy
On September 13, 2026, a solemn divine service was held at the Patriarchate of Alexandria, attended by members of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (IAO). The delegation, which included representatives from Greece, Egypt, Romania, Jordan, and other countries, visited the Patriarchal Monastery of St. George in Cairo.
The Divine Liturgy was presided over by Theodoros II, Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. In his address to the participants of the gathering ( ), His Beatitude emphasized the need to strengthen peace, brotherhood, and mutual understanding among nations. The Patriarch expressed his gratitude to political leaders for their contribution to supporting interreligious dialogue, particularly noting the role of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in preserving religious harmony in the country.
Special attention was given during the meeting to the importance of the region’s spiritual heritage. Patriarch Theodore II highly commended initiatives to develop pilgrimage in Egypt, in particular the “The Way of the Holy Family,” as well as Jordan’s efforts to prepare for the celebration of the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of the Lord on the Jordan River. According to the Primate, these sites are not merely centers of religious tourism, but important bridges for dialogue and peaceful coexistence between the Christian and Islamic worlds.
At the conclusion of the visit, an informal discussion took place, during which the parliamentarians discussed the role of legislative institutions in protecting Christian values and promoting stability on the international stage. The participants expressed their gratitude to the Church of Alexandria for its hospitality and reaffirmed their readiness for further cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of the African continent.
As a reminder, earlier Archbishop Elpidophoros (Lambrinadis), head of the Archdiocese of America of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, stated that the future of inter-Orthodox relations will largely depend on developments in Ukraine. He emphasized that the outcome of the current conflict will determine ecclesiastical relations among the Orthodox Churches, especially in the context of tensions with the Russian Orthodox Church.
