The Vatican called for the elimination of nuclear weapons and the responsible use of artificial intelligence

At the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States, emphasized the need to adhere to strict ethical standards in the development of nuclear technologies. According to Vatican News, the Holy See insists that the peaceful use of nuclear energy must serve the common good and not pose a threat to global security.

In his remarks, Archbishop Gallagher reiterated the Vatican’s consistent position: any developments in the field of nuclear energy must be safeguarded against militarization. He particularly emphasized the inherent responsibility of non-nuclear-weapon states to refrain from developing such weapons. Gallagher also stressed that the security of nuclear facilities in the context of armed conflicts is a critical issue, and that any attacks on such facilities are unacceptable due to their catastrophic consequences for humanity and the environment.

The report devoted special attention to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the nuclear industry. According to the archbishop, the use of AI requires effective human oversight, strict adherence to international safety standards, and a deep understanding of potential risks. The Vatican calls for scientific progress to remain a tool for strengthening peace and sustainable development, rather than the product of short-sighted, emergency decisions.
