Incident at a Catholic church in France: An Islamist armed with a knife attempted to attack a priest

In the French city of Forbach, a 35-year-old man armed with a bladed weapon attempted to attack the Catholic Church of Saint-Rémy while shouting religious slogans. According to the Tribune Chrétienne, the assailant was specifically looking for the parish priest, who was not present at the time of the incident.

According to reports, the suspect burst into the church shouting “Allahu Akbar,” which caused serious concern among local residents. Law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene promptly detained the man, who is currently in custody. It is known that the suspect had previously come to the attention of the French judicial system, although he had not been on any lists of individuals monitored by intelligence agencies prior to this incident.

Investigators are currently conducting a thorough review of the detainee’s background, his mental state, and the circumstances that led to the attack. The incident has not yet been officially classified as a terrorist act. The incident has once again brought to the forefront the issue of security at Christian places of worship in the country, given the tragic events of recent years, particularly the 2016 tragedy in which Father Jacques Amel was killed.
