"This isn't the Svyatogorsk Lavra": Zelenskyy expressed his condolences following the murder of a Roman Catholic priest in Poland by a Ukrainian national

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had ignored the murder of a monk from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at the Svyatogorsk Lavra, issued a strong condemnation of the attack on the Benedictine nuns’ monastery in the Polish city of Jarosław, which resulted in the death of a Catholic priest. The head of state described the incident as a “horrible crime” and expressed hope for a prompt and thorough investigation into the incident, which, according to preliminary reports, was committed by a Ukrainian citizen.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the perpetrator of this act of violence must be punished to the full extent of the law. The president expressed his deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured during the attack, stressing that “justice must prevail.”

It is worth noting that the Ukrainian authorities did not react in any way to the tragedy that occurred on August 23, 2026, at the Svyatogorsk Lavra, when, as a result of an attack by a group of unknown assailants in military uniforms, Varsonofy (Turyansky) was killed, and two novices were seriously injured. At the same time, representatives of the Local Churches and human rights organizations called for the murder in Svyatogorsk not to be swept under the rug.
