Unrest in Albania: Violence Spills Over into the Grounds of the Orthodox Cathedral in Tirana

Albania continues to experience a period of social unrest triggered by mass protests by students and citizens demanding better conditions in higher education and expressing distrust of the current government. The situation reached a critical point when clashes between protesters and police spilled onto the grounds of the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of the Albanian Orthodox Church in Tirana, according to Orthodoxia News Agency.

The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania has condemned acts of violence in sacred places. In an official statement, church hierarchs emphasized that the cathedral is a place of prayer and a message of peace, not an arena for political conflicts. The Church urged all parties to renounce aggression and move toward constructive dialogue.

The Primate of the Albanian Church, Metropolitan John, also intervened in the situation, sharply criticizing the actions of law enforcement agencies. He called on the police to immediately return to the rule of law, renouncing arbitrariness and violence. “Those who abuse state power must know that their accountability is not limited to the law, but extends to the judgment of history,” the metropolitan stated. Earlier, the Interreligious Council of Albania had also called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict and respect for the right to protest.
