Volodymyr Zelensky introduced a bill to cancel the celebration of Christmas on January 7

On June 28, 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy registered in the Verkhovna Rada a bill to cancel the celebration of Christmas in Ukraine on January 7th. This was reported by sud.ua, reports the Information and Educational Department of the UOC.

Bill 9431 provides for amendments to Article 73 of the Labor Code of Ukraine. Namely, January 7 is removed from the list of holidays and non-working days.

It is also proposed to change the dates of celebration of the Day of Ukrainian Statehood and the Day of Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine and to amend Article 73 of the Labor Code of Ukraine, determining that December 25 is celebrated as Christmas, July 15 is the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, October 1 is the Day of Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine .

The explanatory note of the office of the President refers to the decision of the Bishops’ Council of the OCU, which approved “the complete transition from September 1, 2023 to the new – New Julian calendar, according to which most of the Orthodox churches of the world live and which, in particular, provides for the celebration of the Nativity of Christ on December 25, and not January 7th.
