The UN will consider the criminal case against the vicar of Sviatogorsk Lavra

The United Nations Organization will consider criminal proceedings opened against the vicar of the Holy Assumption Svyatogorsk Lavra, Metropolitan Arseniy (Yakovenko) of Svyatogorsk. Also during the meetings devoted to the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Ukraine, they intend to discuss the detention of the hierarch in the pre-trial detention center. About it reports the website of the Alliance “Church against xenophobia and discrimination”.

“According to the assessment of the Human Rights Alliance, the Ukrainian authorities continue the practice of unjustified detention of people in pre-trial detention centers without sufficient legal purpose, which allows the use of imprisonment not as a preventive measure, but as a measure of actual punishment without a court verdict and proven guilt. In view of this, the Alliance’s human rights defenders will prepare a case on the unjustified detention of Metropolitan Arseniy for consideration during the 56th session of the UN HRC (June 18 — July 12, 2024), including during the meetings dedicated to the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Ukraine, as well as take measures to further publicize this process at the international level,” — the Alliance said.

We will remind, on May 14, 2024 Dniprovsky court of appeal left in the pre-trial detention center vicar of the Holy Assumption Svyatogorsk Lavra Metropolitan Arseniy (Yakovenko). The judges did not take into account the arguments of the defense, including the unsatisfactory state of health of the hierarch and the need for constant medical supervision.
