“This bill may become a rib in our relations with Europe and America,” - MP Dmytruk on the ban of the UOC

Ukrainian MP Artyom Dmytruk has commented on the possible adoption of draft law No 8371 aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Dmytruk is convinced that if the law is voted and passed, US and European partners will stop communicating with Ukraine. The MP told about this in an interview with the publication “Telegraf”.

“This law is unconstitutional. This law is strictly condemned by very many European, American politicians, human rights activists, lawyers. This bill may become a rib in our relations with Europe and America. They will simply stop communicating with us the way they do now. And this should be perfectly understood. And as for the fact that votes will be collected… If it were possible to collect signatures in a corresponding letter regarding the ban of the UOC, it would have been done already. Whether it will be done after [the VR recess] – I doubt it. If it was possible, it would have been done,” – the MP said.

Dmytruk added that if the bill No. 8371 was sent for examination to the Venice Commission, it would definitely be criticized because of the blatant facto violations of the rights and freedoms of citizens that are proposed in this law.

“As far as I know, there has been no proceedings yet, but I know beforehand that there can be no positive conclusion there. This is what I have heard from international experts. Both in Britain and America there is a list of people’s deputies, initiators and persons promoting the ban of the UOC. A list that will be submitted to sanctions. Sanctions on the people’s deputies of Ukraine in Britain and the United States, who today promote and support the ban of the UOC. And this is a very important call for all people’s deputies who want to engage in this lawlessness”, – added the MP.

We shall remind you that the Radio Liberty weekly, citing its own sources, reported that the US political establishment is critical of the initiative of Ukrainian MPs to ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by adopting the scandalous draft law No 8371. This is why, according to the publication, this law was not voted on Tuesday, July 23, in the Ukrainian Parliament.
